Strandholm

Strandholm is a relatively unused beach located at the bottom of Præstø Fjord near the summer house areas of Strandhuse and Leestrup Strand. The beach consists of natural grass areas and is approximately 70 metres wide. The water is very shallow with extensive reed and seaweed vegetation. A bathing jetty and boat ramp are available seasonally. The beach is classified as excellent quality, the highest bathing water classification.

Water

Coastal water body in Præstø Fjord. Maximum depth in the fjord is approximately 6 metres at 1200 metres from shore; at the bathing site the water is very shallow, not deeper than 1 metre for several hundred metres out. Water temperature in summer ranges from 13–20 degrees Celsius. Salinity classified as M2, corresponding to 5–18 psu.

Location

Located in Faxe Kommune, accessed via route 209 (Præstøvej/Strandvejen) turning south at Strandhuse/Leestrup Strand onto Strandholm road, approximately 300 metres from the main road.

Bathing jetty (summer); boat ramp.

Season

Bathing water analysis conducted throughout the bathing season. Summer water temperatures range from 13–20 degrees Celsius.

Water Quality

Bathing water classified as excellent, the highest quality classification. Classification based on four years of bathing water analysis data. Non-cloakered areas exist in the near catchment but are not considered to pose a risk for short-term faecal contamination based on analysis results.

Risks

Risk of algal blooms in warm, sunny, windless periods, particularly in shallow areas. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) from the central Baltic Sea can form blooms under favourable conditions. Risk of seaweed (kelp) washup during storms and onshore winds, which creates aesthetic problems and odour nuisance though is harmless to humans. Nutrient leaching from agricultural land in the catchment may influence algae growth but not directly cause water quality problems.
