Isola Madre is a public bathing beach located on Lake Maggiore in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. The beach features a gravelly shore with a width of 266 meters and is situated at an elevation of 200 meters above sea level. Water quality at this site is classified as excellent based on routine monitoring data from 2020–2023. The area is suitable for swimming and water sports activities.

Lake Maggiore. The bathing area extends 0.266 km² with a beach width of 266 meters. The lake is situated at 200 meters above sea level.

Location

Stresa municipality, Verbano Cusio Ossola Province, Piedmont region. The bathing area is located on Isola Madre (Mother Island), one of the Borromean Islands in Lake Maggiore. Contact: Comune di Stresa, Piazza Matteotti 6, tel 0323 939111.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Based on 18 routine samples from 2020–2023. Escherichia coli 90th percentile: 10.8 MPN/100 ml; 95th percentile: 16.5 MPN/100 ml. Enterococci 90th percentile: 20.4 MPN/100 ml; 95th percentile: 34.5 MPN/100 ml. A domestic wastewater discharge is present 200 meters from the monitoring zone; Isola Bella among the three Borromean Islands is connected to the Carciano lifting station, with treatment approximately 10 km to the south. No other pressures from agricultural or industrial settlements are identified.

Risks

Intense precipitation may cause untreated wastewater discharge into the lake due to potential inadequate sewage network management. Vessels may release mineral oils and/or fuel. No cyanobacterial proliferation or macroalgal/phytoplankton blooms have been documented in the past four years.
