Ronco Delle Monache

Ronco delle Monache is a free-access pebble beach located on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore in the Maccagno con Pino e Veddasca municipality in Varese Province, Lombardy. The beach is approximately 15 meters wide and situated a few kilometres from the town centre. The area is frequented by divers and features a fifteenth-century religious shrine. Water quality at this bathing site is classified as excellent based on monitoring data from 2019–2022.

Water

Lake Maggiore. The bathing area extends 0.225 square kilometres. Altitude is 203 metres above sea level. The lake basin is the Ticino River.

Maccagno con Pino e Veddasca municipality, Varese Province, Lombardy, located on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore a few kilometres from the town centre. Limited parking is available.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2019–2022 reference period). Monitoring conducted by the Pallanza buoy (CNR and ARPA) tracks pathogenic bacteria including Escherichia coli, intestinal Enterococci, and cyanobacteria. The Maccagno wastewater treatment plant serves the area and complies with discharge limits set by regulations. The SIMILE project manages the lake and engages citizens in reporting water health information through an app.

Risks

Possible short-term pollution events from unfavourable weather conditions such as severe storms, soil runoff, standing water, and spillage of various materials. Possible accidental or unauthorised discharges of wastewater or polluting debris. Seasonal algal blooms are possible. No anomalous events have been recorded. In the last three years, no exceedances of regulatory thresholds have been observed, and no toxic effects on swimmers or lake users have been recorded.
