São Julião is one of the most popular beaches in Sintra, featuring a long sandy beach between high cliffs at its extremities. The beach is sought after by surfers and fishing enthusiasts. Good surfing and fishing conditions are available at this location.

Water Quality

Water quality classification established in 2020 under Decreto-Lei 135/09 (June 3rd) as amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012 (May 23rd). Sampling frequency is triweekly. Potential microbiological pollution sources include the Ribeiro do Falcão tributary, particularly during intense rainfall. Contamination risk is very low based on historical water quality data. No days of bathing advisories or prohibitions due to short-term pollution were recorded during the 2020 bathing season.

Risks

Short-term pollution events may occur due to increased river discharge after heavy rainfall, though such events are rare and typically last 1 to 2 days. Cyanobacteria, macroalgae, and phytoplankton proliferation are all unlikely. Warning signs will be posted if beach users are considered at risk.
