Sassonia Nord is a bathing beach in Fano, Marche region, characterised by a calcareous-siliceous gravel beach with a shallow average slope of 3–5% on the emerged section and approximately 20% on the submerged section. The beach has an average width of 102 metres and is situated in a densely urbanised area with urban settlements and railway infrastructure nearby. The water body belongs to the Fano-Senigallia system, with astronomical tides ranging from 30 to 50 centimetres.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E. No pollution sources identified that can impact bathing water quality. Wastewater treatment managed by three activated sludge treatment plants. The main facility at Ponte Metauro treats approximately 12,000 cubic metres daily and is located near the mouth of the Metauro River. All monitoring parameters complied with legal limits over the past 4 years, with 24 annual tests of table 1 parameters and 6 annual tests of table 3 parameters.

Risks

Proliferation of non-toxic microalgae (Noctiluca scintillans) occurred during 2008 and 2009 bathing seasons, causing anomalous discolouration of sea water. During periods of intense rainfall, sewer overflow discharges occur through 7 outlets at Ponte Metauro and 10 outlets at Ponte Sasso.
