Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Skærsø is a small beach located in a forest clearing on a freshwater lake in Denmark. The beach consists of grass and a small sandy area in peaceful natural surroundings. The lake is naturally brown-water, and the dark color is not caused by pollution. The entire area is protected, and swimming is only permitted from the small beach in the clearing.

Water

Freshwater lake with an area of approximately 15 hectares. Maximum depth approximately 7 metres. The lake has two minor inlets in the form of small forest drainage ditches and diffuse inflow. There is a piped outlet at the southeastern end. Water exchange is very slow with a retention time of 2 years. No distinct current direction.

Location

Skærsøvej, 6064 Jordrup, Denmark. Parking available at the beach. Beach number G545.

Facilities

Dry toilet in the forest near the beach. Tables and benches in the clearing. Rubbish bins at the clearing and at the parking area. Parking available.

Season

Routine monitoring samples collected throughout the bathing season. Classification revised annually in May before the bathing season starts.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2020). Classification based on routine monitoring samples collected throughout the bathing season over the previous four years (2016–2019) testing for E. coli and enterococci indicator bacteria. The lake was previously heavily affected by nutrient pollution during the 1980s but has improved following intervention.

Risks

Moderate risk of cyanobacteria blooms. Moderate risk of phytoplankton blooms. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) being washed up at the water's edge. Glass shards and litter can occur at the beach.
