Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Fårup Sø is a freshwater lake located a few kilometres south of Jelling in Denmark. The bathing area consists of a small bathing jetty with a grassy recreation area rather than a traditional beach, and features relatively shallow water. The lake has been classified as excellent based on water quality data from 2018–2021. Water quality is monitored during the bathing season from 1 June to 15 September.

Water

Freshwater lake. Water flow is typically from west, with the lake draining to Grejs Å at its eastern end. Relatively low water depth is present at the bathing area.

Location

Located a few kilometres south of Jelling, Denmark. The site has a parking area where information about water conditions is posted.

Water Quality

Water classified as excellent (based on 2018–2021 data). Monitoring conducted during bathing season (1 June to 15 September). Visibility is measured during sampling. Fecal pollution from bathers is not considered significant due to rapid water turnover. Pollution from grazing livestock and manure application is not considered significant.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms, typically following heavy rainfall when nutrients are leached into the water, followed by warm periods. Signs include unclear discoloured water, foam formation, and possibly dead animals. Cyanotoxins can cause headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea and diarrhoea through contact or ingestion. Macroalgae (seaweed) can occur at the water's edge; swimming is not recommended near large accumulations of washed-up seaweed due to potential toxin formation in decaying seaweed and protection of disease-causing bacteria from UV radiation. Short-term pollution from heavy rainfall typically lasts maximum 3 days after rainfall ends. Glass shards, waste, and chemical pollution including oil spills can occasionally occur. Swimming is not recommended if water is unclear and feet are not visible at knee depth.
