Søndervig is a bathing beach located west of the holiday town of Søndervig, facing the North Sea. The beach consists of fine sand with occasional small stone patches and is between 50 and 160 metres wide and 400 metres long. It is situated in a characteristic North Sea environment with high dunes and sandy beach. Water depth increases abruptly offshore and varies due to tidal and weather conditions.

Water

Saltwater in the North Sea. The seabed consists of fine sand. Current direction is primarily from north or south, recorded 33 times between 2008 and 2010. Water depth varies considerably due to tidal changes and weather conditions.

Location

Søndervig, west of the town of Søndervig. Access is via Badevej road. Parking is available in Søndervig town, with a 200-metre paved path leading to the beach. A platform with beach views is located at the path's end.

Facilities

Lifeguard service (selected periods during bathing season), toilet facilities with drinking water, handicap access, emergency phone, first aid kit, rescue ring, warning sign for reduced water quality, trash bins, parking, blue flag.

Season

1 June to 1 September. Water quality is routinely monitored during this period.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Classification is based on routine control samples analysed for E. coli and enterococci indicator bacteria taken during the bathing season. The classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season begins.

Risks

Risk of rip currents (revlehuller) where water depth rises abruptly and varies due to tidal and weather changes. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms. Low risk of large seaweed accumulation. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur. Sudden pollution from accidents involving pleasure boats, slurry tanks, and sewage pipes is possible.
