Sotto il Campanile is a 200-metre-long beach in Sirolo, Marche, composed of limestone gravel with an average slope of 3% on the emerged beach and 10% on the submerged beach. The beach features steep sections protected by natural rocky barriers and has a mean tidal range of 30–50 centimetres. The surrounding area consists of urban settlements, tourist facilities, and Mediterranean scrubland.

Marine coastal water body. Beach length 200 metres, width 10 metres. Distance between medium-low and high water (safe water limit) is 2 metres. Astronomical tide range 30–50 centimetres. Area 0.58993 hectares.

Location

Sirolo, Province of Ancona, Marche region. The competent authority is the Municipality of Sirolo (Piazza Municipio, 1, 60020 Sirolo, AN) and the Port Authority of Ancona. Beach width is 10 metres.

Water Quality

Water quality classification E. Monthly controls conducted by ARPAM in 2010 on Escherichia coli at the treatment plant showed levels ranging from below detection limit to 110 CFU/100 ml, with results always compliant with authorised limits. Sewer network serves urbanised areas of Osimo, Castelfidardo, Numana, and Sirolo, discharging to a treatment plant in Castelfidardo. Treatment plant serves approximately 22,150 equivalent inhabitants from urban areas and 6,550 from productive activities, with approximately 25,300 floating inhabitants during summer months.

Risks

During intense rainfall, sewer system flow rates increase substantially, causing overflow discharge to alternative outlets along the beach in Numana or along the Musone river and its tributaries in Osimo and Castelfidardo. No cyanobacterial blooms reported. No algal blooms reported in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010.
