St. Karlsmindevej is a bathing spot located at Store Karlsminde near Hundested in Halsnæs Municipality, Denmark. The beach consists of a sand strand and marsh area with shallow fjord water. The bathing water is classified as excellent based on monitoring data from 2018–2021. Cyanobacteria blooms can occasionally occur, and macroalgae (seaweed) may be present. Swimming is not recommended within 3 days after heavy rainfall due to stormwater discharge from two nearby drainage pipes.

Water

Fjord water with sandy bottom. The water is shallow. Current direction is predominantly east–west, aligned with the prevailing wind direction.

Location

Located at St. Karlsmindevej east of Lynæs in Halsnæs Municipality. A small bus stop with information signage is located near the beach. Parking is available in a lot near the beach.

Facilities

Sand beach; parking near the beach; information signage. No bathing jetty, lifeguards, or disabled access facilities available.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (based on 16 samples from 2018–2021). During the 2014–2017 bathing season, an average of 1 measurement per season showed slightly reduced water quality. Reductions are attributed to influences from unsewered hinterland areas and potential stormwater discharge.

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms can occasionally occur and may produce toxins causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhea. Macroalgae (seaweed) present a risk; rotting seaweed can release toxins and harbor disease-causing bacteria. Stormwater discharge from two nearby drainage pipes is a source of bacterial contamination. Heavy rainfall exceeding 15–20 mm per day can cause temporary pollution expected to last a few days. Occasional hazards include discarded waste, broken glass, dead seals, and oil spills.
