Vallensbæk Strand is a 1 km section of the 7 km Køge Bugt Strandpark located in the northern part of Køge Bay, Denmark. The beach is an artificially created nature and recreation area that also serves as flood protection for nearby low-lying urban areas. The beach has a sandy foreshore 40–70 metres wide, backed by dunes and beach 90–250 metres wide. The water is salt with relatively low salinity, typically around 1%.

Water

Salt water body in Køge Bay. Sandy foreshore in the water's edge; sand and occasional small stones at 3–4 metres depth. Water depth generally requires swimming 100 metres offshore to reach depths greater than 1 metre, and approximately 150 metres from shore to exceed 2 metres depth. Current direction in the upper part of Køge Bay is highly variable and wind-dependent, but typically weak and safe for swimmers.

Location

Vallensbæk Strand is located in Vallensbæk municipality, between Vallensbæk Harbour and Brøndby Strand. The beach is accessed via Vallensbæk Havnevej, where parking facilities are available. It lies 3 km west of Spildevandscenter Avedøre wastewater treatment plant.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as 'Excellent' based on bathing water analyses from 2019–2022. Historically, quality has fluctuated between 'Excellent' and 'Good' classifications. Identified pollution sources include overflow from Strandpark lakes receiving wastewater during overflow events; water from Lille Vejleå; overflow from Store Vejle stream during heavy rain; and overflow from Spildevandscenter Avedøre wastewater treatment plant.

Risks

Heavy rainfall events (1–3 times yearly) pose a risk of elevated faecal pollution values for 1–2 days afterwards. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms are possible in particular weather conditions, though Vallensbæk Strand is typically affected only once every 4–5 years and for very short periods. Toxic variants of blue-green algae can occur; dogs should not drink water if algae is present. Macroalgae (seaweed) can occur at the water's edge but is removed almost daily throughout the bathing season. Glass shards and litter occasionally occur; lifeguards at Strandpark treat swimmers with lacerations from glass.
