Ishøj Strand is a 3 km section of the 7 km Køge Bay Beach Park located in the northern part of Køge Bay, Denmark. The beach features a sandy shoreline 20–50 meters wide backed by dunes and vegetation 90–250 meters deep. The water is salt with low salinity, typically around 1%, and remains shallow for considerable distances—requiring approximately 100 meters of wading to reach 1 meter depth and 150 meters to reach 2 meters depth. The beach is cleaned almost daily during the bathing season to remove seaweed.

Water

Salt water body in Køge Bay with low salinity of approximately 1%. Sand bottom with occasional stones in shallow water. Current direction in the upper bay is highly variable and dependent on wind conditions but is rarely strong and poses no danger to swimmers.

Location

Ishøj Strand is situated between Ishøj Harbour and Hundige Harbour in a residential area of Ishøj. The main beach access is at the end of Skovvej. Large parking areas are located behind the beach, adjacent to the ARKEN Art Museum.

Facilities

Lifeguards present. Daily waste removal during bathing season, with multiple daily removals in some cases. Parking available.

Season

Official monitoring and beach cleaning occurs throughout the bathing season.

Water Quality

Bathing water is classified as 'Excellent' based on analysis results from 2020–2023. Historically oscillates between 'Excellent' and 'Good' quality according to EU classification. Risk of elevated fecal contamination during heavy rainfall from: discharge from Strandpark lakes, overflow from Store Vejle å, and the Avedøre Wastewater Treatment Centre located 3–4 km east which can overflow during heavy rain. Cyanobacteria risk occurs approximately every 4–5 years and typically for short durations. Phytoplankton is not considered a health problem.

Risks

Heavy rainfall (occurring 1–3 times annually) can cause elevated fecal contamination; swimming is not recommended for 1–2 days after heavy downpours. Risk of cyanobacteria blooms every 4–5 years, typically brief. Seaweed can accumulate in water and along shore. Glass fragments and litter occasionally occur; lifeguards frequently treat swimmers with cuts from glass.
