Kulturbåden is a bathing location situated at Søhesten in Ishøj Harbour, primarily used by winter swimmers. The water is saline with relatively low salinity, typically around 1%. Water depth exceeds 3–4 metres with a sand bottom and occasional stones. The site is located within Ishøj Harbour and adjacent to Strandparken, an artificial nature and recreational area that also provides flood protection for nearby low-lying urban areas.

Water

Saline water body in Køge Bay. Water depth greater than 3–4 metres. Sand bottom with occasional stones. Current direction in the upper part of Køge Bay is highly variable and wind-dependent; currents are rarely strong and safe for swimmers.

Location

Ishøj Harbour, near Søhesten, accessed via Skovvej. Skovvej also provides access to Ishøj Beach and the ARKEN art museum. Limited parking is available.

Water Quality

Classified as 'Good quality' based on bathing water analyses from 2020–2023. Potential fecal pollution sources include discharge from Strandparksøerne lakes (which can receive wastewater overflow) and water from St. Vejleå stream. Overflow from Store Vejle stream can contribute significant loading during heavy rainfall. Very rare impacts possible from Avedøre Wastewater Treatment Centre overflow. Bathing is not recommended for 1–2 days after heavy rainfall, which occurs 1–3 times annually.

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) risk exists; Køge Bay and the broader Baltic Sea are affected by nutrient pollution from treated wastewater and agriculture. Algal blooms typically occur elsewhere in the Baltic Sea first before spreading to Danish waters. Ishøj Harbour and Strandparken are usually affected by cyanobacteria only every 4–5 years and usually for very short periods. Toxic algal variants can occur; dogs should not drink the water if blue-green algae is present. Phytoplankton is not considered a health problem at this location. Macroalgae (seaweed) can occur but rarely in large quantities and is not considered a health problem. Light oil film pollution can occasionally occur due to the harbour location. Swimmers should be aware of sailing boats in the harbour.
