Dunas Mar is an urban beach with an extensive sand strip bordered by a line of dunes. The beach is located in Vila Nova de Gaia along the Douro River basin. It is monitored for bathing water quality under Portuguese regulations.

Season

14 June to 14 September 2025.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Sampling frequency is every 3 weeks. No days of bathing restriction due to short-term pollution occurred during the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to discharge of untreated effluents in the event of malfunction in the wastewater pumping station. Potential faecal contamination may originate from the local sewerage network. Cyanobacteria has a moderate proliferation potential with historical occurrence of blooms. Macroalgae and phytoplankton have low proliferation potential with no historical occurrence.
