Francelos is an urban beach located in Vila Nova de Gaia with an extensive sand strip bordered by a line of dunes. The beach is situated in the Douro River basin and is monitored regularly for bathing water quality. It is a sandy morphology beach delimited by a dune zone.

Water Quality

Water quality classification follows Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Sampling frequency is every 3 weeks. In the 2024 bathing season, there were zero days when bathing was advised against or prohibited due to short-term pollution events.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive flow of the tributary during rainfall, causing microbiological contamination. Untreated effluent discharge may occur if the wastewater pumping station malfunctions. Faecal contamination may originate from the local sewerage network and the tributary ribeira de Canelas. Cyanobacteria proliferation has a moderate potential with historical occurrence of blooms. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation are unlikely with no historical occurrence.
