Vallugola is a rocky bathing area located at the base of Gabicce Monte hill in the Marche region of Italy. The cliff face rises to a maximum of 200 meters and is actively retreating. A narrow pebbly beach separates the rock formation from the sea and is easily overtopped by storms. The average beach width is 60 meters. The bathing area corresponds to beach establishment number 46, which provides access to the sea and services.

Coastal waters of the Adriatic Sea in the area between Gabicce and Pesaro, known as Rio Vallugola, with an area of 0.08237 square kilometers.

Location

Gabicce Mare, Pesaro Urbino Province, Marche Region, Italy. The area is part of beach establishment number 46 and has a sea access path with services available.

Beach establishment number 46 with sea access path and services. Lifeguard authority is Guardia Costiera (telephone 1530). Animals are not permitted.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is Category E. The Gabicce Mare wastewater treatment plant has a capacity of 49,600 population equivalents and serves the territories of Gabicce and Gradara. In 2010, organic load reduction (COD and BOD5 parameters) exceeded 95%, and suspended solids and ammonia nitrogen reduction reached the same percentage. Annual mean concentrations of Total Nitrogen were below 15 mg/L and Total Phosphorus below 2 mg/L, meeting EU Directive 91/271/EC standards. The treatment plant efficiency is verified weekly by the operator and monthly by official ARPAM controls.

Risks

The mouth of Rio Vallugola is present near the bathing area and under particular weather conditions can convey mixed waters from four overflow systems serving the Gabicce wastewater treatment plant. No short-term pollution events were reported. No cyanobacterial proliferation events were reported in the past four years. No macroalgal, phytoplankton, or potentially toxic species proliferation was reported.
