Hvidbjerg Strand at Grønningen is a bathing location on Denmark's west coast, located south of Blåvand-Oksby between headlands 7 and 8. The beach is composed primarily of sand with occasional gravel and stones, and is 70–110 metres wide depending on tidal conditions. The beach has achieved the highest water quality classification of Excellent based on bacterial analysis of E. coli and intestinal enterococci over the last four years. The location has been monitored as a separate sampling station since 2021.

Water

Coastal marine water on Denmark's west coast (Vesterhavet). Salinity approximately 30 ‰. Depth and current conditions are highly variable due to tidal action, currents, sediment deposits, and weather. The seabed transitions quickly to deeper water and is subject to sandbar formation running parallel to the shore.

Location

Located on the west coast south of the town Blåvand-Oksby, between headlands 7 and 8, approximately 1,300 metres south of Hvidbjerg Campingplads. Parking available approximately 30 metres from the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Classification achieved in 2023, 2022, 2021, and 2020 based on monitoring of E. coli and intestinal enterococci bacteria. No direct sewage or stream discharges that affect bathing water quality. The former Søndermarksgrøften stream outlet was permanently closed in the early 1990s. Summer houses with groundwater infiltration on the catchment area do not affect water quality. Water exchange and salinity prevent significant pollution risk from bathers.

Risks

Dangerous rip currents can form between sandbars running parallel to the shore, creating strong currents from the beach toward the waves that cannot be swum against. Foam formation or discoloration of bathing water may indicate algal blooms, and bathing is not recommended under these conditions. Macroalgae typically do not occur in significant numbers on the west coast. Sea foam and accumulated algae may contain bacteria causing stomach illness. Marine bacteria such as Vibrio and Shewanella bacteria are typically absent in significant numbers at Vesterhavet; however, they may occur when water temperature exceeds 20°C for extended periods. Persons with chronic illness or weakened immune systems should seek medical attention if they become ill after bathing in seawater.
