Hvidbjerg Strand is located on the west coast just south of Blåvand-Oksby in Varde Municipality, Denmark. The beach and seabed are primarily composed of sand, with gravel and stones occasionally present. The beach is approximately 60–110 metres wide depending on tidal conditions. The bathing water has maintained the highest quality classification (Excellent) for four consecutive years based on monitoring of indicator bacteria.

Water

Coastal marine water (Vesterhavet/North Sea) with salinity of approximately 3%. Water depth and current conditions are highly variable due to tidal effects, currents, sediment deposits, and weather conditions. Water generally becomes deep quickly, and current conditions can form sandbars (revels) parallel to the coast.

Location

Varde Municipality, west coast of Denmark just south of Blåvand-Oksby. Parking is available approximately 50 metres from the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (Udmærket). This classification is based on four years of monitoring for indicator bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli) and intestinal enterococci. Classification has been Excellent for 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. Monitoring indicates no significant faecal pollution risk from nearby watercourse outlet or ship discharge.

Risks

Dangerous rip currents can form between sandbars running parallel to the coast; currents are strong enough that swimmers cannot swim against them and must drift with the current until it weakens before heading back to shore. Current direction in Vesterhavet is predominantly northbound, but southbound close to the coast. Macroalgae typically do not occur in large quantities; some years planktonic and foam-forming algae may be driven ashore by wind and weather, which can irritate skin and occasionally contain bacteria causing gastrointestinal illness. Vibrio and Shewanella bacteria occur in seawater but typically not in large numbers at Vesterhavet; blooms require sustained water temperatures above 20°C. Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) do not occur at the west coast due to high salinity.
