Blåvandshuk Fyr is a bathing water station located at Vesterhavet (North Sea) just south of Blåvandshuk in Varde Municipality, Denmark. It is the westernmost of ten bathing stations along the municipality's west coast. The beach consists primarily of sand with occasional gravel and stones, and is 70–120 metres wide depending on tidal conditions. A parking area is located approximately 25 metres from the beach. The water has achieved the highest bathing water quality classification of Excellent for four consecutive years.

Water

North Sea (Vesterhavet). Beach and seabed composed primarily of sand, with gravel and stones occurring occasionally. Beach width varies between 70 and 120 metres depending on tide. Water salinity approximately 3%. Depth and current conditions are highly variable due to tidal movements, currents, sediment deposits, and weather conditions; water generally becomes deep rapidly.

Location

Varde Municipality, Bytoften 2, 6800 Varde, Denmark. Approximately 2.5 kilometres south of Blåvand Strand and 8.7 kilometres south of Vejers Strand. A parking area is situated approximately 25 metres from the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (Udmærket). This classification is based on analysis of the past four years of bathing water samples. Testing measures Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci as indicator bacteria for faecal contamination. Annual classifications: 2023 Excellent, 2022 Excellent, 2021 Excellent, 2020 Excellent. No direct sewage discharges or stream outlets affect bathing water quality. The catchment area consists predominantly of natural habitat (heathland and bog). Water exchange and salinity reduce contamination risk from bathers and ship discharges.

Risks

Variable depth and current conditions due to tidal movements and weather. Water becomes deep rapidly. At Blåvandshuk where the coastline changes direction, seabed and current conditions create risk of formation of sandbanks (revels) running parallel to the shore. Between these sandbanks, dangerous rip currents can form flowing from shore toward waves; these currents may be too strong to swim against and require swimming with the current until it weakens before returning to shore. Macroalgae and large seaweed accumulation typically do not occur in significant numbers along the west coast. Phytoplankton and foam-forming algae occasionally wash ashore due to wind and weather; these are typically non-toxic but may irritate skin, and accumulated seaweed may contain bacteria causing gastric illness. Blue-green algae and cyanobacteria do not occur as the North Sea is too saline for their survival. Marine bacteria including Vibrio and Shewanella species can cause illness via mouth or skin contact with open wounds; however, these typically do not occur in significant numbers at the North Sea and outbreaks in saline water require water temperatures above 20°C sustained over a longer period. Persons with chronic illness or weakened immune systems should exercise particular caution.
