Vestre Langeland, Mou Badestrand is a bathing water located on Limfjorden near Mou and Mou Lystbådehavn. The beach has a sand bottom and stretches approximately 2 km with a width of 5-10 meters. Water depth reaches 1.5 meters within 50 meters from shore and 5 meters at 150 meters from coast. The bathing water is classified as excellent based on monitoring of E. coli and intestinal enterococci bacteria.

Water

Limfjorden. Sand beach approximately 2 km long and 5-10 meters wide. Water depth reaches 1.5 meters at 50 meters from shore and 5 meters at 150 meters from coast. Salt content typically 22-30 ‰. Dominant current direction is eastward.

Location

Located at Vestre Langeland near Mou on Limfjorden in the Aalborg municipality. The beach is near Mou Lystbådehavn (Mou Marina).

Season

Water samples are collected during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water classified as excellent. Monitored during bathing season for E. coli and intestinal enterococci bacteria. Possible pollution sources include a stream (Skuen) discharging west of the beach, properties in the surrounding countryside with septic systems or public sewage connections, and stormwater outlets to watercourses. Mou has separate stormwater and wastewater systems; wastewater is treated at Aalborg Øst treatment plant.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms. Risk of phytoplankton blooms due to relatively high nutrient content in the fjord. Macroalgae (seaweed) may occur at the beach edge; large accumulations are not recommended for swimming as decomposing algae can produce toxins and protect disease-causing bacteria from UV rays. Glass shards, waste, and chemical pollution including oil spills occasionally occur.
