Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Hvide Sande Strand is a beautiful sandy beach extending 250 meters along the North Sea west of Hvide Sande. The beach consists of fine sand with scattered small stones and is between 70 and 120 meters wide. The seabed offshore is composed of fine sand. The strand was named Denmark's Best Beach in 2010.

Water

Salt water. Water depth increases steeply offshore and is highly variable due to tidal influence and changes in current and weather conditions. Current direction measurements from 2008–2010 show primary flow from north or south.

Location

The beach is located west of Hvide Sande on the North Sea coast. Access is via Dækmolevej, which leads to a large parking area with toilet facilities, disabled access, and drinking water. An alternative parking area is available at the end of Tungevej.

Lifeguards (selected periods during bathing season), toilet facilities with disabled access, drinking water, parking, first aid kit, emergency telephone, warning sign for reduced water quality, life buoy, waste bins, blue flag.

Season

1 June to 1 September. Routine water quality monitoring occurs during this period.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent. Classification is based on regular control samples tested for E. coli and enterococci bacteria over a 4-year period. The classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season begins.

Risks

Risk of rip currents (revlehuller). Water depth increases abruptly and is variable due to tides and current changes. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms. Low risk of macroalgae accumulation. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur.
