Bjerge Strand is a bathing beach located on the western part of Ringkøbing Fjord south of Hvide Sande in Denmark. The beach is 75 metres long and 10–20 metres wide, composed of fine sand with small stones scattered evenly across it. The seafloor consists of fine sand with small stones and slopes gently, making it very suitable for children. The beach is classified as Excellent quality for bathing water.

Water

Ringkøbing Fjord classified as brackish water. Water depth increases gradually from the shore, with the majority of the fjord being under 2 metres deep. Current direction is variable with no primary current direction. The fjord is measured at 27 points between 2008–2010.

Location

Bjerge Strand is located south of Hvide Sande on the western shore of Ringkøbing Fjord. Access to the beach is via Sønder Klitvej, where a parking area belonging to a nearby surfing club is situated on the eastern side of the road.

Facilities

Toilet facilities with drinking water. Showers available in the surfing club clubhouse. Parking area. Rubbish bins. Warning signs for poor water quality. Waste water discharge information boards.

Season

1 June to 1 September.

Water Quality

Bathing water classified as Excellent quality based on routine monitoring samples analysed for E. coli and enterococci bacteria over a 4-year period. Classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season starts. Regular sampling is conducted during the bathing season from 1 June to 1 September.

Risks

Drain pipes along the coast north and south of the beach pose a risk of high faecal bacteria concentrations during rainfall. A storm water pipe outlet 30 metres north of the beach may contain high faecal bacteria concentrations during rain. A pump station west of the beach has an emergency overflow to the storm water pipe with risk of sewage discharge during capacity exceedance or pump failure. Hvide Sande Treatment Plant, 2.4 km north, has an emergency overflow that may impact water quality during heavy discharge events and southgoing currents. Risk of blue-green algae blooms is low. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is low. Low risk of large quantities of macroalgae washing ashore. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur.
