Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Vesterhavet at Årgab is a beautiful sandy beach 600 metres long and 100 to 120 metres wide, located on the west coast of Denmark facing the North Sea. The beach consists of fine sand with scattered small stones, and the seabed offshore is fine sand. The beach is situated in the distinctive North Sea environment with high dunes and sandy beaches extending as far as the eye can see.

Water

Saltwater. The water depth increases steeply offshore and is highly variable due to tidal and weather conditions. Current direction is measured from primarily north or south, based on 26 measurements taken between 2008 and 2010.

Location

The beach is located west of Hundested in Denmark. Årgab is situated to the south and Hvide Sande is 1 kilometre to the north. Access to the beach is via Mettes bjerg, which leads to a parking area with associated toilet facilities.

Water Quality

The bathing water is classified as Excellent quality. Classification is based on routine sampling during the bathing season for two indicator bacteria: E. coli and enterococci. The municipality has investigated the area and identified no known sources of faecal pollution affecting the beach. Monitoring occurs routinely during the bathing season from 1 June to 1 September, with classification reviewed annually before the season begins.

Risks

Risk of rip currents (revlehuller) due to variable water depth and tidal conditions. Swimmers should be aware that depth increases abruptly offshore. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) bloom. Low risk of phytoplankton bloom. Low risk of macroalgae (seaweed) accumulation. Glass fragments, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills can occur. Sudden pollution events from accidents involving pleasure boats, manure tanks, and sewage pipes are possible.
