Marina S. Giuseppe is a sandy and pebbly beach enclosed within a cove in Ventimiglia, Liguria, delimited to the west by the artificial pier of a tourist marina. The beach is located in a tourist-residential urban context and is backed by the Marconi promenade and a panoramic garden. Private bathing establishments, restaurants, and accommodation facilities operate in the area.

Water

Coastal water body with an area of 0.547 km². Sandy and pebbly beach in a cove formation. Part of the Ventimiglia-Bordighera water body classified as low-stability mountainous coastal waters.

Location

Ventimiglia, Imperia province, Liguria region, Italy. The beach is part of the Ventimiglia-Bordighera water body and is located within a cove delimited by a tourist marina pier to the west.

Water Quality

Classified as EXCELLENT for the 2020–2023 four-year assessment period. Water quality is monitored within Area 1 of the regional Ostreopsis monitoring network. A sewer pipe located approximately 170 meters east of the sampling station discharges into the water. The Ligurian Sea is characterised by oligotrophic conditions that prevent cyanobacterial blooms.

Risks

A sewer pipe transits within the bathing water and discharges 504 meters from the shore. Port-related pollution from the Cala del Forte tourist marina located 570 meters west of the sampling station. During heavy rainfall, increased flow from torrents may transport effluent downstream. Microalgae blooms of Ostreopsis ovata have occurred in Liguria over the past decade; reference station monitoring (Tino at Mortola) showed no exceedances of 30,000 cells/litre between 2018 and 2022. Ostreopsis ovata can cause temporary and reversible respiratory effects and fever in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation.
