Central Beach is a predominantly pebbly beach surrounded by rocky coastline and artificial structures in Zoagli, Liguria. The beach is located within a cove in front of the tourist and residential town of Zoagli. The area is strongly urbanized with a tourist-residential character, particularly during the summer season. The beach has an extent of 3.892 km.

Coastal waters categorized as Portofino-Zoagli body, classified as mountain ridges with low stability (CWA3). The Semorile stream mouth directly affects the bathing water.

Location

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (four-year assessment period 2020-2023). An emergency sewage pipe located approximately 10 metres west of the monitoring point discharges about 730 metres from the shore in case of sewage network failures. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae blooms have occurred in the region over the past decade; at the Zoagli reference station (ZOAG), the limit of 30,000 cells/litre was exceeded in July 2022, and values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre were recorded in June 2022.

Risks

An emergency sewage pipe discharge located west of the monitoring point may transport effluent during weather precipitation and upstream malfunctions. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae can produce toxins causing temporary and reversible respiratory tract problems and fever in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation. The Ligurian Sea is not characterized by cyanobacteria blooms.
