A sandy beach with fine quartz-feldspar and limestone-flint sand, with a slope of 3%. The beach is 80 metres wide and protected by artificial submerged reefs. Water depth varies between 30 and 50 centimetres at astronomical tide. The surrounding area is urbanised with semi-natural environments. Part of the beach is equipped and covered by lifeguard service, while part is concessioned to beach establishments with public toilet facilities.

Water

San Bartolo coastal water body. Average water depth to seaward limit (safe water boundary): 80 metres. Astronomical tide range: 30–50 centimetres. Beach area: 0.12129 hectares.

Location

Pesaro, Marche region, Pesaro Urbino province, Italy. Located along Viale Varsavia, 150 metres south. The area is surrounded by urban settlements.

Lifeguard service on the equipped section. Public toilet facilities in the beach establishment area. Sailing school located on municipal land behind the beach. Beach sports equipment at the beach establishments.

Water Quality

Classification E (poor quality). The main wastewater treatment plant at Borgheria serves the urban core of Pesaro with a capacity of approximately 90,000 population equivalents and flow rate of approximately 20,000 cubic metres per day with biological treatment. All control parameters conform to legal limits. Some mixed urban wastewater collectors not connected to the main treatment plant discharge into the Foglia River and Genica stream. Since 2003, 14 collectors have been partially remediated through connection to the new black sewerage system.

Risks

Discharge from the Foglia River mouth: approximately 5.3 kilometres from the mouth, some mixed urban wastewater collectors not connected to the main treatment plant discharge into the river, along with approximately 20 overflow points. Fioritura of the non-toxic microalga Noctiluca scintillans occurred in 2008 and 2009, with Chlorophyceae bloom in 2009, causing anomalous water discolouration.
