Sandy beach extending to a jetty in Pesaro, characterized by fine quartz-feldspar and calcareous sand with a gentle slope of 3% on both emerged and submerged sections. The beach is protected by artificial rocky outcrops and is surrounded by dense urban development. The distance between mean low water and high water safety limit is 80 meters, with astronomical tidal range of 30–50 centimeters.

Location

Pesaro, in the province of Pesaro Urbino, Marche region. The beach is located near the Foglia River mouth area and is managed as a concession-operated bathing establishment.

Facilities

Bathing establishment (stabilimento balneare) with equipped recreational area. Dogs and other animals are prohibited on the beach during the bathing season under municipal regulation (Council Deliberation 97 of 28 May 2002).

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Category E. The Pesaro municipal wastewater system comprises mixed-type collectors conveying effluent to five treatment plants. The largest facility at Borgheria near the Foglia River mouth serves the urban nucleus with capacity of approximately 90,000 population equivalents and flow of approximately 20,000 cubic meters per day with biological treatment. This facility underwent 24 annual parameter checks (table 1, annex V, Legislative Decree 152/2006) and 6 annual checks (table 3) over the past 4 years, all conforming to legal limits. Some mixed urban wastewater collectors not connected to Borgheria discharge via disinfection stations into the Foglia River and Genica stream; partial remediation has occurred following connection of most buildings in certain city quarters to new black wastewater sewers directing to the Borgheria treatment plant.

Risks

Bloom of Cyanophyceae identified as Oscillatoria curviceps in 2009, producing filamentous aggregates resembling mucilaginous matter.
