A sandy beach near Pesaro with fine quartz-feldspar and limestone sand, featuring the mouth of the Genica torrent. The beach has a gentle slope of 3% and is protected by artificial breakwaters. The water safety zone extends approximately 80 meters from the shoreline at average tide levels. The surrounding area is densely urbanized.

Water

Sandy beach with quartz-feldspar and limestone sand composition. Average beach slope of 3% on both emerged and submerged areas. Astronomical tide range of 30–50 centimeters. Water safety zone extends 80 meters from average low-high water mark. Genica torrent basin covers 21 square kilometers with a total watercourse length of 8.5 kilometers.

Location

Pesaro, Marche region, Pesaro-Urbino province, Italy. Located approximately 2.5 kilometers south-east of the Foglia river mouth. Average beach width is 75 meters.

Facilities

Beach partly free access, partly organized with equipped bathing establishments and independent bar concession. Dogs and other animals prohibited during bathing season.

Season

Monitoring and diversion of Genica torrent waters occurs from late March to October each year.

Water Quality

Classification: Category C (profile date 2011, updated 2012). Water quality classification is E. The bathing area is influenced by untreated wastewater discharge via the Genica torrent. Mixed urban sewage collectors lacking connection to the main treatment plant discharge to both the Foglia river and Genica torrent. The main treatment facility at Borgheria serves approximately 90,000 population equivalents with a capacity of about 20,000 cubic meters per day using biological treatment. All monitored parameters conform to legal limits. From late March to October, Genica waters are diverted to the Foglia river, though heavy rainfall can reduce effectiveness. Short-term bathing bans occur during heavy precipitation events due to microbial contamination.

Risks

Untreated wastewater discharge from the Genica torrent during heavy rainfall events causes short-term microbial contamination and temporary bathing bans. Mixed urban sewage collectors not connected to treatment plants discharge untreated waters, particularly during significant rainfall events.
