A sandy beach with fine sand and a gentle 3% slope located 300 metres north of the Aso River mouth. The beach is protected by artificial rocky outcrops and features a mean width of 30 metres. The distance between mean low water and high water (safe water limit) is approximately 80 metres. Astronomical tide ranges from 30 to 50 centimetres. The surrounding area is urbanised with a railway line passing through.

Coastal water body (Porto San Giorgio_Grottammare). Beach width: 30 metres (average). Bathing area extent: 0.96768 square kilometres. Astronomical tide: 30–50 centimetres.

Location

Altidona, Fermo Province, Marche Region. Managed by the Municipality of Altidona, Largo Municipale, 1 - 63016 Altidona (FM).

Facilities

Bathing establishment (stabilimento balneare) with refreshment point and sanitary facilities. Animals are permitted on the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E (poorest category). The area is served by a mixed public sewer system connected to a treatment plant with a capacity of 9,000 equivalent inhabitants, treating domestic, industrial, and urban wastewater. The treatment plant is biological (activated sludge type) located in Marina di Altidona. Wastewater discharge is continuous into a tributary of the Aso River. Monitoring conducted in 2006–2007 showed good plant efficiency with COD, BOD5, and suspended solids always compliant. Microbiological controls in 2008, 2009, and 2010 were compliant. E. coli monitoring is performed at the river mouth.

Risks

Short-duration pollution events caused by accidental failures and overflow of the municipal treatment plant. Pollution sources identified at 300 metres south of the Aso River mouth discharge point and at the Marina di Altidona and Pedaso treatment plant outlets.
