Fosso dei Turchi is a sandy beach in the Marche region with fine quartz and feldspar sand mixed with calcareous shelly material. The beach has a gentle slope of 3% and is protected by artificial rocky outcrops. The water distance from the beach ranges from 80 metres at average to low tide levels, with astronomical tides between 30 and 50 centimetres. The surrounding area contains urban settlements with a railway line passing through.

Water

Coastal water body part of the Litorale tra Metauro e Cesano drainage basin. The beach extends over an area of 0.80418 units.

Location

Located in Mondolfo, Pesaro Urbino Province, Marche Region. Contact: Tourism Office 'Villa Valentina', Viale Carducci n° 85, Marotta di Mondolfo, tel. 0721/960665. Average beach width is 17 metres.

Facilities

Pavement, cycle path, disabled access ramps, first aid and lifeguard services, toilets, disabled facilities in bathrooms, refreshment points on beach and promenade.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Category E. The area is urbanised. Wastewater treatment: the coastal strip between the A14 motorway and the sea is served by separate sewerage collectors conveying approximately 2,500–3,000 cubic metres of wastewater to the 'Marotta' treatment plant at the Cesano River mouth. A new 'General Valley Collector' is being constructed to redirect untreated discharges. The Marotta facility has had 12 monitoring controls of Table 1 parameters and 3 controls of Table 3 parameters in the last 4 years, all compliant with legal limits.

Risks

Presence of Fosso dei Turchi outlet discharging stormwater. Massive pollution event occurred 10–18 August 2007 involving discharge of sludgy liquid from Fosso dei Turchi, resulting in temporary bathing prohibition. Microalgae blooms recorded: Chaetoceros socialis in 2008 and Fibrocapsa japonica in 2009, causing anomalous water discolouration.
