Sømarken Strand is a bathing beach located on the south coast of Bornholm, stretching approximately 4.7 km between Raghammer Odde and Bakkerne Bådehavn, and extending further between Gedebakke Odde and Raghammer Odde. The beach is predominantly good sandy beach with scattered stones. Water depth increases gradually from the shore to 2 metres approximately 100 metres from land. Seabed conditions with reefs and deeper areas are variable depending on wind and currents.

Water

Marine bathing water with stable salinity between 7 and 8 ‰. Current direction and speed depend on wind conditions; generally small current speeds except during strong winds. The profile covers an approximately 4.7 km stretch of sandy beach with scattered stones.

Location

The beach is accessed via Østre Sømarksvej, Ædjavejen, Baunevej, Gedebakkevej, and Peter Funchs Vej on the south coast near Vester and Øster Sømarken. Public parking is available at the end of these roads, with public toilets at all parking areas except Peter Funchs Vej. A smokery with service is located at Bakkerne Bådehavn and a restaurant at Baunevej.

Facilities

Lifeguard posts are located at multiple points along the beach, with rescue numbers R 332, R 334, R 336, R 338, and R 340 for the stretch from Bakkerne Bådehavn to Raghammer Odde. Public toilets are available at parking areas (except Peter Funchs Vej). A restaurant and smokery with service are available.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as 'excellent' based on data from 2016-2019. Long-term monitoring data from the municipal control station shows good water quality that is only occasionally affected by wastewater. The nearest potential pollution source is an overflow pipeline from a sewage pumping station located approximately 500 metres west of Bakkerne Bådehavn at approximately 8 metres water depth, which discharges wastewater from Pedersker and the eastern part of Sømarken to Boderne Treatment Plant. The overflow functions during heavy rainfall when pumps cannot manage water volumes.

Risks

Blue-green algal blooms (Nodoularia spumigena, Aphanizomenon flos-aqua) occur annually in the Baltic Sea around Bornholm during warm periods (July-August), particularly in sunny, windless conditions. Algae can accumulate in soup-like formations along exposed coasts and produce toxic substances; caution is advised against ingestion and bathing with small children and dogs in areas with high algal concentrations. Seaweed and macroalgae can periodically drift onto the beach causing seaweed smell, though this rarely affects long beach sections. The northwestern part of the beach may be closed during military exercises, though these primarily occur outside the bathing season.
