Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Onsbæk Strand is a bathing beach located on the south coast of Bornholm between Rønne and Bornholm Airport, stretching approximately 1.3 km. Most of the beach is sandy with some rocky sections. Water depth increases gradually from the shore to 2 meters at approximately 100 meters from land. Bed conditions with reefs and deeper areas are variable and depend on wind and currents.

Water

Coastal sea water. Stable salinity between 7 and 8 ‰. Current direction and speed depend on wind, generally low except in strong winds.

Location

South coast of Bornholm between Rønne and Bornholm Airport. Access from Lersøvej and from two parking areas: one in the forest near Lersøvej accessible from Strandvejen and one at Søndre Landevej/Stampen Vej. Nearest public toilets at the rest area at Åkirkebyvej 192 B. The hinterland is forest and the Stampen summer cottage area.

Facilities

Two rescue posts with rescue numbers R 400 and R 410. Access from Lersøvej and two parking areas. Public toilets available at rest area at Åkirkebyvej 192 B.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent based on data from 2016–2019. Long-term monitoring data from the municipal control station shows consistently good water quality at Onsbæk. No nearby pollution sources; hinterland buildings have separate sewage systems.

Risks

Blue-green algae blooms (Nodularia spumigena, Aphanizomenon flos-aqua and others) occur naturally each year in the Baltic Sea around Bornholm, typically in warm months (July–August), especially during sunny, calm periods. Algae can accumulate in gelatinous masses along exposed coasts. No risk from wading through algae to reach clear water, but algae can produce toxic substances and should not be ingested. Small children and dogs should not bathe where algae are abundant. Seaweed and macroalgae may periodically wash ashore, causing seaweed odour. No reported cases of bather illness from algae.
