Balka Strand

Balka Strand is a broad sandy beach located on the east coast between Snogebæk and Balka, covering approximately 1.2 km. The beach features very fine-grained sand with gradually increasing water depth reaching 2 metres about 100 metres from shore. The seabed conditions with reefs and deeper areas are variable and depend on wind and current. Water quality has been classified as excellent based on monitoring data from 2016–2019.

Water

The bathing water is in the Baltic Sea with stable salinity between 7 and 8 ‰. Water depth increases gradually from shore to 2 metres approximately 100 metres from land. Current direction and speed depend on wind conditions, with generally small current speeds except during strong winds.

Location

The beach is located on the east coast between the towns of Snogebæk and Balka. Access is available from Snogebæk, from Vestre Strandvej, or from the parking area at Balka Harbour. Public parking is available at all three access points. Disabled access to the beach is available from Vestre Strandvej.

Facilities

Four lifeguard stations (R 250, R 252, R 255, R 256) are located on the beach. Public toilets are available at parking areas near Balka Harbour, Snogebæk Harbour, and on the beach below Vestre Strandvej. Kiosks and restaurants are available in Balka and Snogebæk. Disabled access to the beach is provided from Vestre Strandvej.

Water Quality

Water quality has been classified as excellent based on monitoring data from 2016–2019. There are no sources of wastewater pollution near the beach. Long-term bathing water data from the municipality's monitoring station shows consistently good water quality.

Risks

Blue-green algae blooms (Nodularia spumigena, Aphanizomenon flos-aqua and others) occur naturally in the Baltic Sea around Bornholm each year, typically in the warm season from July to August, especially during sunny, calm periods. Algae can accumulate in unpleasant masses along exposed coasts. Although algae can produce toxic substances, there is no risk in wading through algal masses to reach clear water. Caution is recommended to avoid ingesting algae, and small children and dogs should not swim where algae is abundant. The municipality has no record of swimmers becoming ill from algae. Kelp and other macroalgae can periodically drift onto the beach causing unpleasant odours and aesthetic issues.
