Cyprus Coastal 1 - Excellent

Agios Georgios Frangkudi 1 is a sandy beach located in the Lemesos district of Cyprus, bounded on the west by a stone stabilisation breakwater and on the east by a wooden pier. The beach is backed by residential and tourist development, with easy access via Lemesos Avenue. The seafront is protected by submerged wave breakers positioned parallel to the shore, approximately 150 metres from the waterline. The beach measures 140 metres in length.

Water

Coastal marine water body designated as Lemesos East (code CY_14-C2). Average water depth 1.5 metres, maximum depth 3 metres. Sandy seabed with no vegetation. The nearshore zone is modified, featuring parallel wave breakers and a stone stabilisation breakwater. Maximum daily bathers: 370 persons.

Location

Located in the Municipality of Agios Athanasios, Lemesos district, Cyprus. Accessible via Lemesos Avenue, which runs adjacent to the beach. The area is densely developed with residential buildings, hotels, and recreational facilities on both sides of the avenue.

Facilities

No public facilities directly on the beach. Toilets available through recreational facilities in the coastal zone. The beach is operated by a private concessionaire who provides related services and is responsible for beach cleanliness through manual and mechanical means. The beach holds Blue Flag status.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent based on monitoring data. The bathing water has been monitored for many years, with formal monitoring reports under Directive 76/160/EEC beginning when Cyprus joined the European Union in 2004. The coastal water body is in good ecological status.

Risks

Moderate risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton growth based on identified pollution sources. Possible pollution sources include stormwater runoff from the densely urbanised inland area and industrial zone, passage of commercial vessels offshore, and mooring and transit of recreational vessels in nearby areas. No short-term pollution incidents recorded during the 2008–2010 bathing seasons. Risk of short-term pollution is negligible. Potential sources of short-term pollution: malfunction of coastal development sewage systems, stormwater runoff, and passing vessels. Estimated frequency: once per bathing season with typical duration of 1–2 days.
