Cyprus Coastal 1 - Excellent

Amathus is a sandy beach with a nearly straight coastline located in the Limassol district of Cyprus. The beach is 270 metres long and bordered to the west by a rubble breakwater. A hotel facility is situated in the coastal zone, and Limassol Avenue runs parallel to the beach with residential and tourism infrastructure on both sides. The beach has been reduced in width by pedestrian pathway construction.

Water

Sandy beach in the Eastern Limassol coastal water body. Beach length: 270 metres. Average water depth: 1.5 metres. Maximum water depth: 3 metres. Seabed composition: sand with few pebbles. Two submerged rubble breakwaters are constructed approximately 150 metres parallel to the shoreline to protect against wave action and sand erosion.

Location

Eastern Limassol area, Cyprus. Located east of Mixoudkia 2 beach and west of Dassoudi 1 beach. The beach is accessed via Limassol Avenue which runs along the shore. Parking information is not specified.

Facilities

No public facilities. Toilets available through the hotel facility in the coastal zone. Waste collection bins along the entire beach length, maintained by Germasogeia Municipality. Summer services available including sun loungers and umbrellas. Small harbour for recreational vessels exists to the west.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data. The coastal water body is in good ecological condition. Water quality has been monitored for many years, with formal monitoring reports prepared since Cyprus joined the European Union in 2004.

Risks

Moderate risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton eutrophication development. Short-term pollution risk is small. One recorded pollution incident occurred between 2008 and 2010 (5 May 2009) attributed to weather conditions. Possible sources: rainwater runoff, commercial vessel traffic offshore, and recreational vessel movements.
