Brysoudia A is a sandy beach located in southern Paphos, Cyprus, characterised by a delta-shaped sand tongue deposited behind a parallel breakwater constructed approximately 100 metres from the shore. The beach is 250 metres long with an average water depth of 2 metres and a maximum depth of 3 metres. Access to the beach is via a stone-built staircase, and the upper part of the beach terminates in a small cliff of 3 to 4 metres in height. The beach has been awarded Blue Flag status.

Location

Paphos District, Paphos Municipality, southern Paphos, Cyprus. Coordinates: 32.4211° E, 34.7503° N (ETRS89). Access via stone-built staircase.

Facilities

Public facilities available. Waste collection bins on the promenade upstream of the beach, maintained by Paphos Municipality. Summer services include loungers and umbrellas. Lifeguards and lifesaving equipment available from 11:00 to 17:30. Blue Flag designation.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data. The coastal body to which this beach belongs is in good ecological status. Monitoring under Directive 76/160/EEC began in 2004 following Cyprus's accession to the European Union. One isolated pollution incident was recorded during the 2007 swimming season. From 2008 to 2010, only one short-term pollution incident was recorded on 25 May 2010, attributed to a passing vessel.

Risks

Low risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton eutrophication development. Small risk of short-term pollution. Seaweed (Posidonia) concentrations present on the beach. Possible sources of short-term pollution: malfunction of sewage systems in coastal developments, storm water runoff, and passing vessels. Short-term pollution incidents last 1 to 2 days. Frequency: once during the swimming season.
