Årø Odde

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Årø Odde is a 400-metre-long sandy beach located on the western side of Årø island, facing Årø Sund. The beach is 10–20 metres wide and consists of sand with scattered small stones. The seabed is similarly composed of fine sand with few stones. The beach offers views over Årø Sund and the island's natural landscape.

Water

Årø Sund is a brackish water body. The water depth increases rapidly from the shore; depths below 2 metres extend approximately 50 metres from the coast. Current direction is variable with no primary direction.

Location

Årø Odde is located on the island of Årø in Haderslev Municipality, south of the ferry terminal. Parking is available at the beach car park. The island has approximately 150 permanent residents and a campground on its eastern side.

Facilities

Parking, toilets, waste bins. A warning sign for reduced bathing water quality is located at the beach.

Season

Bathing water quality is monitored during the official bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent. Classification is based on regular monitoring for faecal indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci) conducted during the bathing season. Classification is recalculated annually in May. Haderslev Municipality has identified no known sources of faecal pollution with potential to degrade water quality at this location.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms is low. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is low. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) washup exists; bathing near large accumulations of seaweed is not recommended. Glass fragments and litter can occur. Risk of chemical pollution is very low.
