Årøsund Badehotel is a 300-meter-long bathing beach located east of the small town of Årøsund in Denmark, adjacent to Årøsund Harbour which offers ferry connections to Årø. The beach consists primarily of fine sand with scattered small stones, and is 30–40 meters wide. The water in Årø Sund is classified as brackish water. The bathing water has been classified as excellent quality based on routine monitoring of indicator bacteria between 2012 and 2015.

Water

Årø Sund, a brackish water body. The seabed consists of fine sand with scattered small stones. Water depth is less than 2 meters up to 100 meters from the shore. Current direction is variable, primarily from the north.

Location

The beach is centrally located east of Årøsund, a small town with approximately 300 inhabitants. Årøsund Badehotel is situated at the beach. Parking is available at the northern parking area where toilet facilities are located.

Toilets with drinking water, parking, trash bins, warning sign system for degraded water quality.

Season

Bathing season monitoring occurs during the official bathing season. Water quality classification is reviewed annually in May before the bathing season begins.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. The classification is based on routine monitoring for fecal indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci) conducted during the bathing season. Haderslev Municipality has identified no known sources of fecal contamination affecting the beach area. Treated wastewater from Årøsund Treatment Plant is discharged via a submarine pipeline north of Årøsund Fishing Harbour and does not affect bathing water quality within the beach boundary.

Risks

Risk of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms is low. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is low. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) wash-up exists; bathing is not recommended near large accumulations. Two overflow structures near the ferry dock may cause short-term fecal contamination during heavy rainfall; bathing is not recommended during rainfall and for up to 72 hours after rainfall ceases. Glass shards and litter may occur. Risk of chemical contamination is very low.
