Baia Blu is a bathing area located in Cala Chiappara, between Punta Santa Teresa and Punta Galera, in the Gulf of La Spezia. The beach features rocky coastline with gravel and pebble shores. The bathing water is classified as coastal waters with mountainous terrain and low stability. Water quality was rated as excellent between 2008 and 2011.

Coastal water body in the Gulf of La Spezia. Area extension: 1.066 square kilometres. The site drains via the Fosso degli Scogli watercourse.

Location

Lerici, La Spezia Province, Liguria Region. The bathing area is situated within Cala Chiappara, between Punta Santa Teresa and Punta Galera. Contact: Municipality of Lerici, Piazza Bacigalupi 9, tel 0187601.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: excellent (2008–2011). No coastal wastewater treatment plants, Imhoff tanks, or coastal outfalls are present. River mouth identified as a source of pollution pressure.

Risks

Potential for toxic algal blooms. Cases of potentially toxic algal strains were detected. Alert threshold exceedances occurred in 2008 and 2009 in both water and macroalgae samples. Cyanobacteria blooms are not characteristic of the Ligurian Sea due to oligotrophic conditions.
