Intensive boat traffic occurs due to the port entrance channel, the sailing club landing, and mussel farming operations. The bathing water was classified as Excellent for the four-year period 2018–2021.

Coastal water body in the Gulf of La Spezia. The bathing water area extends 0.492 km and is situated in a small inlet between Punta Calandrello and Punta Santa Teresa.

Location

Lerici municipality in La Spezia province, Liguria region. The bathing area extends 0.492 km and is located between Punta Calandrello and Punta Santa Teresa. Stairs provide access to the beach. The Alta Battery of Santa Teresa, a nineteenth-century fortress, is located inland above the beach.

Water Quality

Classification for 2018–2021: Excellent. No wastewater treatment plants or coastal sewers are present in the area. The monitoring station was relocated to the bay in 2022 while the bathing water boundary remained unchanged.

Risks

Port-related pollution from merchant ship passage through the eastern access channel to La Spezia port. During heavy rainfall, increased torrent flow may transport wastewater downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae have been documented with values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre in July and August 2019, July and August 2017–2018, September 2018, and September 2020–2021, without exceeding the 30,000 cells/litre threshold. Inhalation of aerosol from Ostreopsis ovata can cause temporary and reversible upper respiratory issues and fever in sensitive individuals.
