Hullehavn is a small beach located in a cove on the rocky coastline east of Svaneke on Bornholm. The cove extends approximately 75 metres from the outermost cliffs to a small sandy beach with an area of about 1000 square metres. Water depth is shallow near the sand beach but increases towards the cliffs, with depths exceeding 10 metres just outside the cove. A bathing ladder and diving board are installed during the bathing season.

Water

A small cove on a rocky coastline. The cove extends approximately 75 metres from the outermost cliffs to the cove bottom. Sandy beach area of approximately 1000 square metres. Water depth is shallow at the sandy beach but increases seaward, with rocky bottom and depths exceeding 10 metres outside the cove. Water salinity is stable between 7 and 8 ‰.

Location

Hullehavn is located east of Svaneke on Bornholm. Access is via Skovgade. Public parking is available on the road Ved Stranden, approximately 500 metres from Hullehavn. A kiosk and toilets are located at the beach. Restaurants and shops are available in Svaneke.

Season

Bathing season is indicated by the installation of seasonal facilities (bathing ladder and diving board). Blue-green algae blooms typically occur July-August.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data from 2016-2019. No pollution sources are identified in the vicinity. Many years of bathing water data from the municipal monitoring station show consistently good water quality.

Risks

Blue-green algae blooms (Nodularia spumigena, Aphanizomenon flos-aqua) occur naturally in the Baltic Sea around Bornholm during warm months, particularly July-August during calm, sunny periods. Algae can accumulate in gruel-like formations along exposed coasts. Algae can produce toxic substances; swimming where many algae are present is not recommended for small children and dogs. There is no documented risk of wading through algal accumulations to reach clear water. Seaweed and macroalgae periodically drift onto the beach, causing kelp odour and aesthetic issues. Offshore winds can cause strong currents and wave action outside the cove.
