Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Langemarken is a nearly 1 kilometre long beach located outside urban development on the South Funen Archipelago Sea coast. The beach features a rocky, wind-exposed shoreline with a small dyke behind it. The seabed consists of sand with stones and seaweed in the shallow water. The beach is characterized by a stony structure with small stones and stretches over 500 metres in length.

Water

South Funen Archipelago Sea, classified as saltwater. Water depth less than 2 metres extends 70–200 metres from shore. Tidal range is minimal, below 0.5 metres. Current direction is variable depending on wind conditions, primarily from west and east.

Location

Langemarken 34, 5762 Vester Skerninge, Denmark. Parking available on the grass verge along Langemarken road, though the outer end of the verge is often wet. The road leads directly to the dyke and beach, with stone structures and two ramps on either side of the beach below the road.

Facilities

Parking available. Mobile coverage across the entire beach. No lifeguard station, toilets, showers, bus access, kiosk, restaurant, bathing bridge, or blue flag status.

Season

Official monitoring season: 1 June to 15 September.

Water Quality

Bathing water classification: Excellent quality. Classification based on routine control samples from the last four years analysed for E. coli and Enterococcus bacteria during the bathing season (1 June to 15 September). Classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season begins.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria and phytoplankton blooms assessed as low, though blooms can occur suddenly during warm periods with high nutrient levels. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) wash-up at the water's edge; bathing near large accumulations of decomposing seaweed is discouraged as it may contain toxins and pathogenic bacteria. Glass fragments, litter, and chemical contamination including oil spills may occur. No known persistent sources of faecal pollution registered, but sudden contamination from leisure boat accidents, slurry tanks, or sewage pipes is possible.
