Baracchetta Biagio is a predominantly pebbly beach in Recco, Liguria, located within a natural inlet of the Genova-Camogli water body. The beach is bordered by artificial structures including a boat moorage to the east and a wastewater treatment plant (Punta S.Anna) approximately 300 metres to the west, with discharge pipes located about 600 metres and 1.3 kilometres offshore. The Torrente Recco stream mouth is present in the area. The beach received an Excellent classification during the 2016–2019 four-year evaluation period.

Coastal water body. Part of the Genova-Camogli water body, which is in non-good ecological status. Area extends 0.228 square kilometres. The water body is characterised by low stability in mountainous terrain.

Beach establishments (stabilimenti balneari) are present. Animals are permitted in the area.

Water Quality

Four-year evaluation (2016–2019): Excellent classification. Intestinal enterococci 90th percentile 21.5 UFC/100 ml, 95th percentile 35.0 UFC/100 ml. Escherichia coli 90th percentile 71.9 MPN/100 ml, 95th percentile 105.4 MPN/100 ml.

Risks

Punta S.Anna wastewater treatment plant and two active discharge pipes located 600 metres and 1.3 kilometres from the beach. Torrente Recco stream mouth can transport wastewater downstream during heavy precipitation events and upstream pollution conditions. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal proliferation occurs in the region; a reference station (BAGN, Bagnara) exceeded the limit of 30,000 cells/litre in July 2017 and 2019. Inhalation of aerosol from this species can cause temporary and reversible respiratory symptoms and fever in sensitive individuals.
