Bjerge Os Brovejen

Denmark Coastal 2 - Good

Bjerge Os Brovejen is a sandy beach approximately 300 metres long in the main area around the parking lot on Brovejen, extending roughly 1 kilometre southward and northward to the sugar canal. The beach is 5–15 metres wide depending on tidal conditions and is entirely covered with eelgrass, blue mussels, and macroalgae. A rescue station is located on the beach.

Water

Sandy seabed in a bay. Main water flow direction is southward and easterly. Water depth varies with tidal conditions.

Location

Located near Kalundborg, Denmark, accessible by car from Brovejen where parking is available. On foot, access is possible via roads between the summer houses. A toilet and small playground are situated at the parking area.

Lifeguard post, toilet, small playground at parking area.

Season

Monitored at minimum 4 times per year. Bathing season classification review conducted annually in November following the bathing season.

Water Quality

Classified as 'Good' based on measurements of intestinal enterococci and E. coli from 2019–2022. Primary pollution source is Ornum Treatment Plant. Short-term pollution is usually caused by heavy rainfall leading to treatment plant overflow, typically lasting a maximum of 3 days after rainfall ceases. Risk is considered minimal despite eastward water flow, as discharge occurs far into the bay via submarine pipeline and treatment plant overflow is very rare.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms, which can cause headache, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea. Large quantities of macroalgae (seaweed) at the water's edge can present a health risk by promoting bacterial growth and prolonging survival of faecal bacteria. Signs include foam formations at the water's edge, water discoloration, and possibly dead animals. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution can occasionally occur.
