Mullerup Strand is a sandy beach approximately 220 meters long and 20 meters wide, located in Kalundborg Municipality, Denmark. The beach features fine sand with occasional small stones, and the seabed consists of sand and stones with shallow water extending a considerable distance offshore. The beach is classified as Excellent based on measurements of intestinal enterococci and E. coli from 2018-2021. It is bordered by cultivated fields and accessible via Kirke Helsinge Strandvej.

Water

Sandy beach approximately 220 meters long and 20 meters wide. The seabed consists of sand and occasional stones. Shallow water extends a considerable distance offshore. Main current direction is eastward.

Location

Mullerup Strand is located in Kalundborg Municipality along Kirke Helsinge Strandvej. Parking is available on the opposite side of the road. An 80-meter-wide grassed area separates the road from the beach. A rescue ring is positioned near the stream outlet in the northern section.

Facilities

Toilet facility located at the southern end of the beach. Information board installed at the toilet building. Rescue ring positioned near the stream outlet in the northern section.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (based on intestinal enterococci and E. coli measurements from 2018-2021). The primary fecal pollution source is the Kindelbæk stream outlet. Risk from stream discharge is assessed as significant due to the dominant eastward current direction at the beach. Short-term pollution typically results from heavy rainfall causing drainage and stream overflow, lasting a maximum of 3 days after rainfall ceases.

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) risk present, potentially causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhea in humans and potentially fatal effects in animals. Risk of phytoplankton growth and macroalgae accumulation in the beach area. Large quantities of seaweed at the beach edge can promote bacterial growth and extend survival of fecal bacteria. Short-term pollution from heavy rainfall causing drainage and stream overflow.
