Bjerge Os Sukkerkanalen is a sandy beach approximately 1760 meters long and 5–20 meters wide, located along a canal in Denmark. The beach has significant macroalgae coverage and features very shallow water with a sandy seabed. Behind the beach is a 80-meter belt of marram grass and grasses, followed by a summer house area and cultivated fields. The beach has been classified as 'Excellent' based on intestinal enterococci and E. coli measurements from 2018–2021.

Water

Sandy beach in a canal system. The beach is approximately 1760 meters long and 5–20 meters wide depending on tide. The seabed consists of sand with very shallow water. Water currents primarily flow in easterly and southerly directions.

Location

Access is from Osvejen at Sukkerkanalen, where a parking area is located. A toilet facility and a coastal hiking route information board are available at the parking area. The beach extends from the canal southward toward Bjerge Os Brovejen.

Season

Monitoring occurs a minimum of 4 times per year. The classification section of the profile is revised annually in November after the bathing season ends.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent (based on 2018–2021 measurements of intestinal enterococci and E. coli). Short-term pollution typically results from heavy rainfall causing overflow in watercourses and treatment plants, lasting a maximum of 3 days after rainfall stops. The identified sources of fecal pollution are Sukkerkanalen and Ornum treatment plant. Risk from the treatment plant is considered minimal despite eastward water flow, as discharge occurs far out in the bay via a sea pipeline and overflows at Ornum treatment plant are very rare.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms, which can cause headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhea in humans and potentially fatal effects in animals. Large quantities of macroalgae (seaweed) present a health risk by promoting bacterial growth and prolonging survival of fecal bacteria. Short-term pollution from heavy rainfall can occur with overflow risk. Other occasional pollutants include glass shards, litter, and chemical contamination.
