Reersø Nordstrand

Reersø Nordstrand is a sandy beach approximately 400 meters long and 15 meters wide, located in Kalundborg Municipality, Denmark. The beach features occasional small stones and is divided into two levels in about half its area, with large stones covering the slope between levels. A shallow seabed of mostly sand extends well out from shore. The beach is equipped with volleyball nets and a few pine trees.

Water

The water body consists of sand and shallow seabed extending well offshore. The beach is approximately 400 meters long and 15 meters wide. Stone barriers (breakwaters) and an earth dike are located behind the beach. The primary current direction is southward.

Location

Located in Reersø village in Kalundborg Municipality, Denmark. Vehicle access is available via Wilhelmsvej, which ends at a parking lot. A toilet facility is located at the parking area. A rescue station is situated west of the parking lot. Pedestrian access is available via paths between nearby houses.

Season

Bathing season profile section is revised annually each November after the swimming season ends. Monitoring occurs a minimum of 4 times per year.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is EXCELLENT based on intestinal enterococci and E. coli measurements from 2018–2021. Ornum Treatment Plant is identified as a source of potential fecal pollution. Short-term pollution typically results from heavy rainfall causing treatment plant overflow, usually lasting a maximum of 3 days after rainfall ends. The risk is assessed as minimal despite southward current direction, as discharge occurs far offshore via a marine pipeline and overflow at the treatment plant is very rare.

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) can produce toxins causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhea in humans and potentially death in animals. Large amounts of seaweed (macroalgae) at the water edge can pose health risks and extend survival of fecal bacteria in water. Short-term pollution from heavy rainfall is possible. Glass fragments, litter, and chemical pollution may occasionally occur.
