Bjert Strand

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Bjert Strand is a fine small sandy beach located along a minor summer cottage area with a green space leading down to the shore. The beach consists primarily of fine white sand with small to medium-sized stones. The beach is 200 metres long and features a large bathing pier. Water quality is classified as excellent, based on routine monitoring of faecal indicator bacteria during the bathing season.

Water

The beach faces Lillebælt (Little Belt). Water is classified as brackish. Current direction is variable. Water depth increases gradually from the shore and the area is very shallow. Depth conditions are approximate and subject to tidal variation.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2020: Excellent. Classification calculated on basis of routine control samples taken regularly during the bathing season over the preceding four years (2016–2019). Monitoring tests measure E. coli and enterococci as faecal indicator bacteria. Classification is revised annually before the start of the bathing season.

Risks

Streams discharge at the western end of the beach, 200 metres further west, and 600 metres to the east, presenting risk of elevated faecal bacteria concentrations especially during rainfall; swimming is discouraged in and around stream outlets. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms but occurrence is possible. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms but occurrence is possible. Risk of seaweed (macroalgae) wash-up in the water's edge. Glass shards and litter can occur on the beach. No chemical pollution risk from nearby sources identified.
