Grønninghoved Strand Syd

Grønninghoved Syd is a wide, sandy beach that is very child-friendly and attractive. The beach consists primarily of fine white sand with few stones and has several bathing piers along its length. One pier at the southern end includes a wheelchair ramp into the water. A large green area with ample space for play is located near the beach. The beach is 300 metres long.

Water

The beach faces Lillebælt and the water is classified as brackish water. Water depth increases gradually from the shore, with depths under 2 metres extending approximately 200 metres from the coast. Current direction is variable.

Location

The beach is located at Strandvejen Grønninghoved, 6093 Sjølund. Parking is available at the beach. Toilets are located at the beach, with disabled facilities at the southern end.

Season

The bathing season is monitored from May onwards each year. Monitoring results are available on newostjylland.badevand.dk.

Water Quality

The bathing water at Grønninghoved Syd was classified as Excellent in 2020. The classification is based on routine monitoring for indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci) conducted throughout the bathing season over the previous four years (2016–2019). A stream outlet located just south of the beach carries a risk of high faecal bacteria concentrations during certain periods, but within the beach boundary the stream has low influence on water quality under normal circumstances. The area has a sewage system.

Risks

A stream outlet just south of the beach may contain high concentrations of faecal bacteria; swimming is discouraged at and around this outlet. Risk of blue-green algae blooms is low but possible during extended periods of warm water. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is low but possible. Macroalgae (seaweed) may be washed ashore; swimming near large accumulations is discouraged as they can promote bacterial growth. Glass shards and litter may occur at the beach.
