Skibelund

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Skibelund is a child-friendly beach located below Kolding Nature School on the Little Belt (Lillebælt). The beach is 250 metres long and features fine white sand with a bathing bridge. It is separated from a large green recreational area by tall trees that create a pleasant atmosphere. The beach has been classified as excellent quality based on routine water sampling for fecal indicator bacteria.

Water

The beach borders the Little Belt (Lillebælt) and the water is classified as brackish water. Water depth increases gradually from the shore and is under 2 metres approximately 200 metres from the coast. Current direction is variable. Water depth may change with tide.

Location

Skibelund is located at Skibelundvej, 6092 Sønder Stenderup, in Kolding Municipality, Denmark. A large parking area is available near the beach, along with facilities below Kolding Nature School.

Facilities

Toilets, large parking area, camping area, bonfire site, bathing bridge, rubbish bins at parking area and toilet, lifeguard equipment (rescue rings).

Season

Routine water quality monitoring takes place during the official bathing season. Classification is revised annually in May before the bathing season.

Water Quality

The beach water has been classified as excellent quality as of 2020, based on routine sampling for E. coli and enterococci during bathing seasons from 2016–2019. The classification is revised annually before the bathing season. No known sewage outlets, watercourse discharges, or drains are present in the surrounding area, resulting in low risk of fecal pollution. There are no storm sewer overflows near the beach.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria blooms is low but possible. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is low but possible. Seaweed (macroalgae) may wash ashore at the water's edge. Glass shards and rubbish can occur at the beach. Sudden pollution from accidents involving pleasure boats, slurry tanks, or sewage pipes is possible.
